Residents of Iowa City and rural Johnson County,
not served by another public library, are issued
free library cards. Also honored are cards from any
library participating in Iowa's Open Access Program.
Non-residents and Residents of University Heights may purchase cards.
Free library cards may be obtained by residents of
Coralville, Iowa City, Solon, Oxford, North Liberty
and rural Johnson County with an I.D. and proof of
current address. Library cards from Iowa libraries
that participate in the Open Access Program will also
be honored. Other interested borrowers and residents of
University Heights may purchase a card.
The library and archives maintain a large collection of materials related to the history of Iowa and the Upper Midwest. The collection includes 210,000 volumes, 35,000 reels of microfilms, 6,000 sheets of maps, 1.5 million photographs, 4,000 autographs, 8,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 1,800 reels of oral history tapes, an extensive set of bound Iowa newspapers, plus video tapes, sound recordings, and other ephemera. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday (The archives, photograph, and manuscript collections are closed Saturdays, unless arrangements are made in advance, the reading rooms are closed state holidays and some Saturdays).
